Introduction to Capstone Project SKE

The Capstone Project, course code SKEE/SKEL 4723, provides students with the opportunity to integrate technical knowledge and generic skills attained in the earlier years. This is to be achieved within the context of an engineering project conducted in a small team of four students under the supervision of an academic staff and with optional of industry partner, as the advisor. Topics supplementing this course that include project management tools and practices, organizational structures, engineering standards as well as the social and environmental responsibility of professional engineers are covered in the Professional Ethics and/or Engineering Management courses offered prior to or concurrent with the course. Capstone Project is a major component of any engineering curriculum that showcase of knowledge and skills acquired over the years of studies, design a product/service of significance, and solve an open-ended problem in electrical engineering and it satisfies the mandatory curriculum requirement by Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC).

Learning Outcomes

• CLO1 - Ability to independently recognize the need of end user and applying the latest and suitable technology to solve complex engineering problem. (In-Lab Activities, Peer Review, Technical Report)

• CLO2 - Use appropriate techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools, instrumentation, software and hardware necessary for solving complex engineering problem with an understanding of their limitations. (Individual Report, In-Lab Activities, Technical Report, Interview)

• CLO3 - Plan and conduct a project within a specified budget and time frame using available resources for complex engineering problem. (Minutes of Meeting, Technical Report)

• CLO4 - Design solutions for complex systems, component, or process with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, legal and cultural issues, and environmental consideration (Individual Report, In-Lab Activities, Conceptual Prototype, Final Product, Technical Report, Interview)

• CLO5 - Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams. (In-Lab Activities, Minutes of Meeting, Individual Report, Peer Review)

Project Attributes

• Each group will be assigned a project by the appointed facilitator/s.

• Projects assigned to each group are mainly industrial or community-based.

• Projects must include the use of electrical engineering tools but NOT limited to microprocessors, micro-controllers, PCB development, PLCs etc.

• Projects may not necessarily be tangible but must be a product that can be demonstrated in terms of operation and functional.

Project Implementation 

There will be 3 meetings with the total meeting hour of 42 hours same as the full-time students in Faculty of Electrical Engineering, UTM Johor Bahru. Capstone Project will be held in Week 1, 4 and 8 based on the academic calendar of 2021/22-3 as the followings:

• Meeting 1 (14 hours): 07-08 August 2023, Mon-Tue (Online - Webex platform)

• Meeting 2 (14 hours): 28-29 August 2023, Mon-Tue (UTM Johor Bahru)

• Meeting 3 (14 hours): 25-26 September 2023, Mon-Tue (UTM Johor Bahru)
